1. System Requirements Folio Views Software

  1. Pentium Class or higher processor.
  2. Windows 95/98/NT/2000.
  3. 32 MB minimum of memory on Windows 95/98 (64MB or more recommended);
64 MB minimum of memory on Windows NT/2000.
  4. 10MB of hard disk space for minimum (CD-ROM) install. Approx 33MB for full install (Program Files Only).
Network Server installations require sufficient space for all the infobase (.NFO) files.  The amount depends on the size of the Library.
  5. SVGA or higher-resolution video adapter (16 bit or higher colour recommended).

Thomson Reuters does not support Folio 4 infobases on Windows 3.x, Windows TerminalServer, Citrix WinFrame/MetaFrame or Macintosh platforms so the following
instructions apply only to Windows 95/98/NT/2000.

2. Installation

The install program (setup.exe) offers the following options:-

a) For a standalone PC

  • Minimal install, which leaves both Folio application and the infobase data files on the CD. This option installs very quickly and uses a negligible amount of hard disk space.
  • Optimal install, which copies the Folio application to hard disk, but accesses the infobase data files from the CD. This option uses some 35MB of hard disk space.
  • Hard Disk install, which copies both Folio application and infobase data files to the hard disk. This does require more hard disk space but performs much faster than either of the other two options.

b) For a Network

  • Network Drive install, which copies both Folio application and infobase data files to the server drive. This does require more hard disk space but performs much faster than:
  • CD Tower install, which copies the Folio application to a server drive, but accesses the infobase data files from a networked CD Tower. This option uses some 35MB of hard disk space. When a network install is used, each workstation which is to access the information must have its own install carried out. This workstation install is carried out by running a separate install program, called WSETUP.EXE, from each workstation which needs to access the data.

  9. Select the destination location for the install. Setup needs to install about 33MB of information (if this is your first Thomson Reuters' Folio 4.2 library) to your hard disk. If you have another Thomson Reuters electronic library installed already, be sure to choose the same location as that library.
  10. You will then be prompted whether to install an icon to the Windows desktop as well as the program group or only to the program group. Select which option you prefer and click Next.
  11. A summary of the options you have selected will now appear. To begin copying files, click Next.
  12. Setup will begin copying files to your hard drive. Once this is complete, you will be asked whether you want to unlock the library immediately. You must unlock before you can use the library, but you do not need to do so now. Make your choice and click Finish to complete the install.
  13. You will now have a "Thomson Reuters Library Manager - Folio 4.2" item in your Start Menu. This is where you start the program to unlock your library, if you did not do so at installation. Remember you have to call Customer Care on 0800 10 60 60 to unlock your library.

FULL INSTALL TO LOCAL HARD DISK
  1. Insert the CD into your CD-Rom drive.
  2. From the Start menu, choose Run.
  3. In the Open box that appears type: d:\folio432\setup and click OK (where d: is the drive letter of your CD-Rom drive). This will launch the install program.
  4. You will receive a Welcome message. Click the Next button to continue.
  5. Select the option "I am performing a new installation", and click Next.
  6. Select the option "Standalone computer" to install to a single computer, and click Next.
  7. Select the option "Install to Local Hard drive (Full)", and click Next.
  8. Select the Infobases to install. You should select only the infobases you subscribe to. This choice controls which infobases are copied to your hard disk drive. If you are unsure which infobases you subscribe to, contact Customer Care (0800 10 60 60) for assistance, please have your Customer Number handy. If you select infobases you haven't subscribed to, they will be copied to your hard drive but they will not be unlocked for you, so they will simply use up your hard disk space unnecessarily. If you do not select all the infobases that you subscribe to, the unselected ones will not be copied and will not be available when you unlock your library. To recover from this situation, you will have to re-install and re-unlock your library. Click Next to continue.
  9. Select the destination location for the install. We recommend that you install to a "C:\ThomsonReuters\FOLIO432" folder. Setup needs to install about 33MB of Folio program information (if this is your first Thomson Reuters library), and somewhere between about 50MB and 750MB (depending on the library) for the library information. If you do not have enough space, it will warn you. If you have another Thomson Reuters' electronic library installed already, be sure to choose the same location as that library.
  13. You will now have a "Thomson Reuters' Library Manager - Folio 4.2" item in your Start Menu. This will contain a shortcut to start the Library Manager, which gives you access to all your installed libraries, a ReadMe shortcut, which opens this file, and shortcuts to the Rights Management programs for each of your installed libraries. This is where you start the program to unlock your library, if you did not do so at installation. Remember you have to call Customer Care on 0800 10 60 60 to unlock your library.

NETWORK DRIVE SETUP

The network drive option will copy the Folio application and infobase data files to a server drive, from which individual workstations may be installed. Run the WSETUP.EXE program from each workstation to enable it to access the server files.

SETUP creates a directory structure on the selected network drive which contains all the Folio Views program files, the *.INI files and the Workstation Installation program.

It is strongly recommended that network installations are installed using UNC pathnames (See FAQ section of this file). If however you choose to install to a drive letter, you must ensure that the drive letter of the shared network drive is the same drive letter mapped on all workstations.

We also recommend that you run setup from a workstation when installing to the server.

Subsequent updates will need to be run from the workstation that the library was originally installed from, no other workstation can be used for updates.

  6. Select the option "Network install" to install to a network drive, and click Next.
  7. Select the option "Install to Network Drive", and click Next.
  8. Select the destination location for the install. The Folio application and Infobase data files will be installed here. Note that you must have read/write access to the network directory chosen. We recommend that you install to a "...\THOMSONREUTERS\FOLIO432" folder on your network drive. The install program will suggest a default path of C:\THOMSONREUTERS\FOLIO432. You must change this to the UNC path (or mapped network drive letter) of your choice however we strongly recommend retaining the ...\THOMSONRETERS\FOLIO432 path.
  9. Select the Infobases to install. You should select only the infobases you subscribe to. This choice controls which infobases are copied to your hard disk drive. If you are unsure which infobases you subscribe to, contact  Customer Care (0800 10 60 60) for assistance, please have your Customer Number handy. If you select infobases you haven't subscribed to, they will be copied to your server drive but they will not be unlocked for you, so they will simply use up your hard disk space unnecessarily. If you do not select all the infobases that you subscribe to, the unselected ones will not be copied and will not be available when you unlock your library. To recover from this situation, you will have to re-install and re-unlock your library. Click Next to continue.
  10. Select a location for the infobases. This may be different from the location of the other components. Setup will tell you if there is insufficient space at the location you choose. We recommend using the default location.
  11. You will then be prompted whether to install an icon to the Windows desktop as well as the program group or only to the program group. Select which option you prefer and click Next.
  12. A summary of the options you have selected will now appear. To begin copying files, click Next.
  13. Setup will begin copying files to your server drive. Once this is complete, you will be asked whether you want to unlock the library immediately. You must unlock before you can use the library, but you do not need to do so now. Make your choice and click Finish to complete the install.
  14. You will now have a "Thomson Reuters Library Manager - Folio 4.2" item in your Start Menu. This will contain a shortcut to start the Library Manager, which gives you access to all your installed libraries; a ReadMe shortcut, which opens this file; and shortcuts to the Rights Management programs for each of your installed libraries. This is where you start the program to unlock your library if you did not do so at installation. Remember you have to call Customer Care on 0800 10 60 60 to unlock your library.
  15. You must now run WSETUP.EXE on each workstation that you want to run Thomson Reuters Electronic Libraries (See "NETWORK WORKSTATION SETUP" later in this file.

NETWORK CD TOWER SETUP
  6. Select the option "Network install" and click Next.
  7. Select the option "Install to Run from CD Tower", and click Next.
You must change this to the UNC path (or mapped network drive letter) of your choice however we strongly recommend retaining the ...\THOMSONREUTERS\FOLIO432 path.
  9. Select the Infobases to install. You should select only the infobases you subscribe to.  If you are unsure which infobases you subscribe to, contact Customer Care (0800 10 60 60) for assistance, please have your Customer Number handy. Click Next to continue.
This will contain a shortcut to start the Library Manager, which gives you access to all your installed libraries, a ReadMe shortcut, which opens this file, and shortcuts to the Rights Management programs for each of your installed libraries. This is where you start the program to unlock your library if you did not do so at installation. Remember you have to call Customer Care on 0800 10 60 60 to unlock your library.
  14. You must now run WSETUP.EXE on each workstation that you want to run Thomson Reuters Electronic Libraries.  (See "NETWORK WORKSTATION SETUP")

NETWORK WORKSTATION SETUP

Once the library has been unlocked you can go to each workstation and run WSETUP.EXE from the ...\THOMSONREUTERS\FOLIO432\WORKSTN folder on your network drive. You now have the option to either run the program files from the network drive (Typical), or copy them to a local hard disk (Custom).  We strongly recommend choosing the TYPICAL option since this option makes management and updating of the software much easier.

WSETUP.EXE will create a program group called "Thomson Reuters Library Manager - Folio 4.2" on your workstation Start Menu and will install icons for each of the products on the CD-ROM or network drive.  Some entries will also be made in the workstations registry.

If you have chosen the "Run From Network CD Tower" installation type, unless you have installed to a UNC path you will need to ensure you have a drive mapping to both the CD-ROM and the shared Brooker's folder on the network drive.

The workstations will not be able to open any of Brooker's Libraries until WSETUP.EXE has been run.

Workstation setup can be run in "silent mode" and attached to a login script or similar automated program distribution system.  Please contact Technical Support (0800 10 60 60) for further information.

3. UPDATING INFODATABASES

Updates need to be run from the workstation that the library was originally installed from, no other workstation can be used for updates.

In general it is recommended that you install updates in the order in which they are distributed.

Updating is handled by the SETUP program. This ensures that you receive the most up-to-date copies of the Infobases, as well as the Library Manager and Folio Views.

Ensure no-one is using any Thomson Reuters' libraries before attempting to update.

  1. Insert the CD into your CD-Rom drive.
  2. From the Start menu, choose Run. In the Open box that appears type: d:\folio432\setup where d is the drive letter of your CD-Rom drive. This will launch the install program.
  3. You will receive a Welcome message. Click the Next button to continue.
  4. The option "I am updating an existing installation" should be selected by default. Click Next.
  5. A summary of the Infobases that will be updated will now appear. To begin copying files, click Next.
  6. Setup will begin copying files to your hard drive. Once setup is complete, the closing dialog box will appear. Click Finish to complete the update.
  7. If any problems are encountered, please call 0800 10 60 60 and ask for the Customer Care Technical Support Team.

4. UNINSTALLATION

* From the workstation that the library was originally installed from, proceed as follows:

  1. On the Start menu, click on Settings and select Control Panel. The Control Panel window will appear.
  2. Double-click on the icon Add/Remove Programs. This will bring up the Add/Remove Programs Properties window.
  3. Click the Install/Uninstall tab.

In the list that appears, select the Thomson Reuters' library you want to uninstall and click on the Add/Remove button.

* At the end of the uninstall process the uninstaller may tell you that some files could not be deleted. If only one of Thomson Reuters' Electronic Libraries was installed on your computer, these files and directories can be safely manually deleted.

5. LAW PARTNER 2 CD SET

If you are subscriber to Law Partner including the LINX infobase you should be aware the complete Law Partner will not fit on one CD.  We are therefore providing it on 2 CDs, with LINX on the second CD and all the other infobases on the first CD.

  1. If you do not subscribe to LINX, Law Partner will be supplied on only one CD.
  2. If you do subscribe LINX you should note the following points.
  3. For installation and updates, start with the CD marked "Volume One". You will be prompted to insert the second volume at the appropriate point in the update/install procedure, if the installation type requires it.
  4. If you use a CD Tower, you will need to reserve two CD slots instead of one, and always use the same two slots.
  5. The standalone optimal installation is still supported. This installation writes the programs to your hard disk, but leaves the data to be read directly from CD. If you are using this type of installation and you activate a hypertext link between LINX and any of the other infobases, you will be prompted to insert the other CD of your New Zealand Law Partner set. If you are using Windows 95/98 (but not if you are using NT), you then also have to find the infobase on the new CD.
If you open LINX directly from the Library Manager you must have Volume 2 of the set in the CD reader. Otherwise Folio Views will return an error that "The system could not find the file specified."
  6. The standalone minimal installation is not supported.

6. MAINTENANCE

From time to time it may be necessary to re-install one or more of your Thomson Reuters Electronic Libraries.  The need to do this will be clearly indicated on the CD packaging.

This is required because of changes made in the library structure such as the addition of a new infobase, changes made to the Library Manager or Rights Management system.

Before re-installation can occur you must first un-install the existing library (see item 4. above).

Once you have re-installed you will also need to contact Thomson Reuters' Customer Care Team (0800 10 60 60) to obtain a password to unlock your library.

7. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I run another publisher's products and Brooker's products on Folio 4.2 without interference?

You can open a Thomson Reuters' infobase in another publishers distribution of Folio 4.2. Please be aware however that Thomson Reuters cannot guarantee the performance of our infobases in another publishers distribution of Folio 4.2.

Are UNC paths supported?

Yes.  Thomson Reuters strongly recommends the use of UNC path names when installing on a network.  There are a few things to be aware of when installing to UNC paths.

  - The install program cannot browse for a UNC path, therefore you will have to manually type in the path at the "Choose Destination Location" screen.

  - The install program cannot calculate the amount of free disk space on the destination drive when installing to a UNC path, and will give a warning to that effect after the path has been entered. You
will need to ensure there is sufficient free space on the destination drive before installing.

  - Depending on the Library you are installing, the setup program needs up to 100MB over and above the space required by the Library to run successfully.  This extra space is only required while the
    install program is running.

After running WSETUP.EXE on the workstations I receive a "Directory Name Invalid" error when clicking on one of the icons in the Library Manager.

This error is caused by installing to a different drive letter than that which is mapped on the workstations.  If you install to a drive letter you must choose one that is uniform across the network.  This is one of the advantages of using UNC paths, there is no need to map any drive letter on the workstation if the installation was done to a UNC path.

The icons and buttons on my toolbars appear to be different to what I see printed in Thomson Reuters' Training documentation.  How do I correct this?

This requires a modification of a registry setting.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. It cannot guaranteed that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  - Ensure you are logged in as the correct user.
  - Close all Thomson Reuters applications
  - Click "Start", select "Run".
  - In the Run dialog box type REGEDIT.
  - Click OK.  The Windows Registry Editor will open.
  - Expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software branch.
  - Locate and delete the "Thomson Reuters" subkey.
  - Close the Registry Editor.
  - Locate the ...\ThomsonReuters\Folio432\Folio folder.
  - Double-click the Folio.reg file.
  - Re-start Thomson Reuters' Library Manager and open an infobase.
